Regenerating bone is hard.
There are no bones about it: whether it’s a prized racehorse, a beloved pet dog, or even a human, bouncing back from a broken bone that won’t heal on its own is no easy task.
Biomedical Engineering Professor Kent Leach is on the fast track to repair non-healing fractures. His research centers on taking stem cells from fat cells to regenerate tissue in bone injuries. With this innovative approach, Leach is able to deliver oxygen and critical nutrients directly to the broken bone, speeding recovery time dramatically. He has successfully used this treatment on three racehorses recovering from bone cysts, and hopes to see people benefit from these breakthroughs.
Discovering a better way to treat fractures is hard. Supporting those discoveries through giving? That’s an easy way to do some good.
