Uniquely UC Davis

Hal ’52 and Carol ’04 Sconyers love UC Davis so much that they moved back to Davis from Modesto after Hal retired from a successful banking career. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that the couple is very pleased to co-marshal the centennial Picnic Day Parade—a uniquely Aggie tradition.

Being closer to campus makes it easier for the couple to indulge in one of their favorite things: surprising each other with uniquely Aggie gifts. For their 50th wedding anniversary, Hal hired the UC Davis Band-uh! to march up and down the couple’s block to serenade Carol. For Hal’s 80th birthday, Carol threw him a surprise party in the club room of the new Aggie football stadium.

Carol and Hal are both devoted fans of Aggie athletics, especially men's and women's basketball since Hal played on the basketball team when he was a student. They have even traveled to the Aggie football games on the team planes—always filled with much Aggie pride!

Having served as the chairs of the initial steering committee for the campaign to build the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, they both continue to support and enjoy the wonderful regional venue on the UC Davis campus.

While many of the couple’s gifts to The Campaign for UC Davis have supported these two passions, they’ve given to any part of campus where they see a need.

“It’s impossible to look around and not get excited by what’s going on at UC Davis,” Hal said. “We are grateful for the ways we have been able to be supportive and be involved."
