A recent gift from award-winning Bay Area producer, director, and journalist gayle k. yamada gives an important boost to the UC Davis Library’s capacity to preserve and digitize unique archival materials in its collections.
One portion of yamada’s gift endows a fund for the library’s Archives and Special Collections to digitize unique archival materials, including correspondence, paper records, photographs, and rare books, and make them publicly available online.

Thirty-one project teams of students, faculty and staff across UC Davis and UC Davis Health raised $97,138 from more than 715 gifts during October’s Crowdfund UC Davis campaign. To date, the program has raised $2.8 million for the university.

The Office of Development and Alumni Relations and the UC Davis Foundation presented the 2024 Faculty and Staff Stewardship Awards during a ceremony on Oct. 19. The recipients are:
Jan Isaac Shrem, whose passions spanned publishing, winemaking, collecting art, and philanthropy, passed away peacefully in September at the age of 94 after a long illness. Shrem leaves a legacy of art at the University of California, Davis, that will live on for generations.
He and his wife, international arts patron Maria Manetti Shrem, built a longstanding partnership with UC Davis to support arts, art history and design programs at the university. The San Francisco resident is remembered for his dedication to making the arts and education accessible.
As a senior in high school, Bill Owen ’69, J.D. ’72 applied to UC Davis “sight unseen” and went on to earn both a bachelor's and law degree from the university and become a decades-long Aggie supporter.
Today, the retired lawyer is giving back to students in a new way with a charitable gift annuity (CGA).
“I received a world-class education at UC Davis. Because of that, I wanted to give something back and pay it forward. For me, my gift takes care of both,” said Owen.
The Mary Oakley Foundation is giving $1 million to UC Davis Health to establish an endowed faculty fellowship in brain research, with a special focus on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Gifts to the campaign have empowered first-generation students to achieve their dreams, funded groundbreaking research across disciplines, and expanded resources that contribute to the university’s vibrant culture and academic excellence.
Alumnus Jeffrey Berger ’74 and his wife Sheri Berger have donated a major piece of public art to the University of California, Davis. “Ghetto Wall,” an original sculpture by the prominent California artist and educator Ruth Cozen Snyder, was installed on Aug. 24, 2024, in the courtyard of Peter J. Shields Library, at the heart of the Davis campus.
